Pothos Care Guide: Easy Tips for Growing Lush, Healthy Vines

Pothos, or Epipremnum aureum, also known as the Devil’s Ivy, is one of the most popular yet easiest houseplants to take care of. With its gorgeous trailing, air-purifying qualities, and adaptability, it is an excellent choice for both novice and experienced plant lovers.

How to Care for Pothos

1. Light Requirements

  • Best: Bright, indirect light for faster growth and vibrant foliage.
  • Tolerates: Low-light conditions, but growth may slow down.
  • Avoid: Direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.

2. Watering Needs

  • Water once every 1–2 weeks, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.
  • Overwatering can cause root rot, while underwatering may result in wilting.
  • Reduce watering during colder months.

3. Soil and Potting

  • Use well-draining potting mix, such as a mix of peat moss, perlite, and potting soil.
  • Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent excess water retention.

4. Temperature & Humidity

  • Thrives in temperatures between 65°F – 85°F (18°C – 29°C).
  • Prefers moderate humidity but can adapt to normal household conditions.
  • If air is too dry, occasional misting helps keep the plant happy.

5. Fertilizing

  • Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
  • Avoid excessive fertilization, as pothos grows well even without it.

Common Problems and Solutions

1. Yellowing Leaves

  • Cause: Overwatering or poor drainage.
  • Solution: Let the soil dry out and ensure the pot has proper drainage.

2. Brown or Crispy Leaf Edges

  • Cause: Underwatering or low humidity.
  • Solution: Water the plant adequately and increase humidity if necessary.

3. Leggy or Sparse Growth

  • Cause: Insufficient light.
  • Solution: Move the plant to a brighter location or prune to encourage bushier growth.

How to Propagate Pothos

1. Water Propagation

  1. Cut a 4-6 inch stem with at least two leaves and a node.
  2. Place the cutting in a glass of clean water, ensuring the node is submerged.
  3. Keep in indirect light, changing the water every few days.
  4. Once roots are 1–2 inches long, transfer to soil.

2. Soil Propagation

  1. Cut a healthy stem with a node.
  2. Plant directly into moist soil.
  3. Keep in bright, indirect light and water lightly.
  4. Roots will develop in a few weeks.
